Wouldn't it be something to see the flaming chicken back on the streets--wow, almost makes me want to go find that polyester shirt I tucked away in the 70s and put on some Old ****e! There'll be some hot loving tonight at the disco!
I had an `81 TA w/the big bird on the hood. I tell ya, people either loved it or hated it, but all agreed that it screemed balls swinging far and wide. I don't think GM's execs, with all thier "market analysis" mentality pointing them in the direction of the soccer mom, have what it takes now to let it all hang out like that anymore. At least not on an affordable car--i.e. one they expect/hope would sell to a wide audience. Look what injustice they did to the GTO badge. Just my feeling of GM these days.

Ill tell you why everything is going retro ...2 reason 1. The keep trying to figure out how to get Mustang type sales 2. No one wants to be differint fallow the leader... By the way I am a Pontiac guy .....so dont get all big headed
That is a pic from a design commisioned by Hot Rod magazine, it's too bad GM doesn't have that kind of talent on staff. They also had concept pictures of a new Barracuda (looked like a Challenger concept with a different hood and tail lights) and a Mercury Cougar. GM should buy the design and use it, but with their brilliant higher ups I'm sure they would mess it up and trample the name to death ala G.T.O.
Somebody passed this along my way. I can't wait till the Stangs get a crack at GM's new one. Don't let the exhaust fool you, remember it's inside an empty ballroom.
I just look at these concept cars, and if you put all the concepts together (Mustang, Camaro, Firebird) it seems to me all they do is change the front grill, redo the rear lights, add a few dramatic curves, lighten some others and call it a unique idea. I always thought the Camaro concept looked like the 05-06 stang, except the rear resembled the Corvette and the nose was a bit more pointed. Now the Firebird looks like they stuck an old grill on and redid the back. The Charger, and while I'm not a big fan of it's styling, is the only one that looks like it actually went it's own way and did what it felt it should do, which sadly in my opinion included 4 doors.
Love the concept Trans Am (black) much better than the camaro.
Had a new '79 Trans Am, ordered it, gold w/ the bird. It was the first one with the 4 individual headlights ('79,'80, '81), but last one with the larger engine (it was an auto so it had the 403 Olds motor). I liked the looks a lot better than the bandit front end. Was a Mustang man till the 'Mustake II' came out (last one was a '73 351 H.O.). I switched to Pontiac, would not buy a camaro. Trans Am was a lot better built car then. If I had to buy GM it would be Pontiac.
My wife has an '04 Grand Prix GTP COMP G (Supercharged 3.8 V6 with a handling package). I have an '06 Mustang GT Premium Coupe. I'll say this for the Pontiac it is just as much fun to drive as my Mustang. It's a 4 dr, heavier, and over a foot longer. I think my Stang is a bit quicker but the GTP handles quick as a cat. It's loaded and stickered for 31,900, my Stand stickered for 29.900. It is a lot more deluxe than mine, has a lot more stuff even an automatic trans with FULL manual mode (called Tap Shift).
I love my Mustang but to be honest, if Pontiac can put together the Trans Am like they did the GTP COMP G, Ford had better have thier act together. Pontiac may have learned a lesson with the FUGLY GTO, but if the GTO becomes the Trans AM Ford may be in trouble.
Like I said I absolutely love my Mustang but give credit where credit is due.

And even if it does happen, it won't look great anymore... I hate it when manufacturers tease us with awesome-looking concepts and then, by the time the vehicles roll off of the assembly line, they've been toned-down and generalized to the point of not looking good anymore.

Looks great but will never happen. GM sucks.
+1

Yeah, case in point, the new Shelby GT500. I loved-loved-LOVED the concept hood, which is totally gone now. "C"
GM wont be coming out with this. They are in some serious fianancial stress and for them to come out with this. Sometimes I wish people wouldnt make nice designs like this and tease us with them. I would love to have one if this came into production.
Yeah, my boyfriend told be about a possible 2009 Firebird last night, so I was looking for more info. Havn't come up w/ anything solid yet, just a possibiliy of GM using the Camaro Concept to create a V8 RWD Pontiac...possibly a GTO, Trans Am, or Firebird. I definetly think that that rendering is better then the Camero Concept though! I've always loved Camaros, and was excited about a "retro" looking one, but was severely dissapointed in the 2009 Camaro Concept.
So, what's the deal w/ the retro u ask??? Well, personally I like it! It'd been a while sence I had seen the artistic vision that was aparantly lost by automakers going into to 80's. The Mustang started the muscle car era and has now created the rebirth! The Camaro attempts the retro look, but to me seems too boxy and square. I believe the Challenger concept has acheived the most retro look. But, still gotta love my Stang! I've only owned Fords so far... and there's no looking back!!! I have released my Camaro admiration, and as a proud new 06 Mustang owner, I'm Ford loyal now!!!
