I have an 03 Cobra and I was wondering if anyone has tried cutting off the mufflers and welding a piece of pipe in place. I was thinking of doing this because the cobra's stock exhaust is just too quite and I don't have enough money right now to get a cat-back system. Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If loud is what you're looking for, then I say go for it.

you'll just have to pay a private garage to get it inspected.

my friend did that on his 98 and dumped it but he left the muffler mounted under it so you could look under his car and it looks like it still has a muffler

I have electronic cut outs on my Redfire 03 Cobra.  I've also talked to many people who put straight pipes in and they love it.  I would imagine that it sounds like my cutouts except a bit more muffled.  I DO notice a drop in torque when I open the cut outs which is why I only open them at higher speeds and RPMs.  They are located after my cats and before my flowmasters.  Good luck. What would be the effect of putting them before the cats?

if you put em before the cats theres less to restrict it.  it is a cutout that when u flip a switch it opens it automatically.

Does the supercharged engine need some back pressure like a normally aspirated engine does?

You need backpressure for torque.  For Horsepower you don't.  Backpressur eis just the act of using the reverse pressure from escapping gases to help pull exhaust out of the cylinders and down threw the ehaust system.

Exhaust works in waves.  cylinders fire at different times and exhaust at different times.  The less restriciton an exhaust has the better it will move the exhaust gases. A good design exhaust for the street involves setting the exhaust lenght for the optimum pulling wave from the exhaust.  Because most cars run in the lower rpm band backpressure gives good acceleration.  If one were to spend a lot of time at redline a non-back pressure system is better.

well actually they do apparently need some backpressure to "stabilize the pulses" as a source has told me.
