My dad has a 68 Coupe with a 289. It started idling a little rough about 10 days ago so we tuned it up with little improvement. We discovered a knocking under the valve cover so we pulled it off. We found the valve keepers on the forward valve (intake?) over #3 were gone! What could have caused this? I'm trying to install a new set so the car hopefully will be drivable until our new motor arrives. I'm having a hard time installing the keepers and when I apply air to the cylinder through the spark plug hole it just blows out through the intake manifold. Do I need to put the #3 on TDC to get an air seal? Are there any tricks to installing these keepers? THANKS

Yes, the piston needs to be at TDC for the air pressure to hold. About 100 psi should do it. This is necessary to keep the valve rod in the up position so it doesn't fall back in. Now, get yourself a good valve spring compressor and compress the spring in order to get the keeper in place.
