Well this weekend I ran a GM. I was going home from work through town and there were countless ricers. I had to laugh because I enacted a no-flyby-zone on a black jetta w/ a "badass" punk and three girls. After I left them like they were still, he pulled up to me and I saw three wide open mouthes. hahahahaha

As I am almost home, I spy some familiar headlights coming up and what do I see??? Non other than a Trans Am. From the body style, I can tell that it is the older LT1 version. We catch a light and the guy is in there w/ his GF. On green I just edge out and keep it in first and about 3500rpms. Then he hits it. He jumps to about a hood ahead and stays there. My bumper is at his door. From there we take off and by the middle to top of third, I run right by him. We then immediately had to stop for a light. I ask him about his car and he tells me it is, "an LT4 that is running bad." I know that they should run like an LS1 and I would have been destroyed. I then was able to on a future launch to spinn from a roll in first at about 4000rpms. He wouldnt even mess w/ me.

I will not claim a win because he very well could have stopped when I went by him. I just dont think it was really an LT4 or he had a really damaged car, or REALLY bad driver. What do you think???

There was an LT4, it was stock in the 96 Vette manual cars as well as the Gran Sport, as well as a very limited number of SS Camaros and Firehawks. The parts (heads, cam and intake) where also avalible from GM to convert your LT1 to an LT4. They were generally 300+ hp to the wheels and should be about even with a stock LS1 performance wise.

yea, the LT1 to LT4 conversion seems like a popular upgrade for the LT1 guys around here. I just think that he was B*llsh*tting me about that mod. If he did have it, he should have walked me, esp. from the 5mph roll we did. I find it hard to believe that his car was "running badly" but running and he couldnt beat me. I actually have a hard time running w/ the LT1 camaros and firebirds regardless w/ their 275-285hp. idk but I smelled a rat.

The guy was lying, even if this story is true... Even a crappy running LT1 would destroy a '96 GT. An LT4 wouldn't bother.

Yeah, that would have to be a reeeeeally rough running LT4. Those made 330hp stock if I remember correctly. It's essentially an LT1 with a little higher compression and bigger lift/duration cam and some other things.

You're lucky it wasn't an LT5 :D :P

Like stated above the LT4 was an option in 96 which came in the Gran Sport Corvettes. They are identified by M6 tranny and will have the 2 big rally stripes down the center of the car. All other 96 vettes were autos. And yes, there were special edition Camaro and Firehawks that had the LT4 but never a GM produced car. Aftermarket companies such as SLP and others installed the LT4.

The LT4 itself was a good powerplant. But the conversion kits sold have a different cam known as the Hotcam. It's bigger than the stock LT4 cam and use a 1.6 roller rocker as opposed to the stock stamped steel 1.5 ratio rockers. The heads and intake differ due to a .100 taller intake runner. The LT4 intake can be easily identified due to it being red powdercoat. But that doesn't always mean it's an LT4 or not. Mine is powdercoated Purple and it's an LT1 intake. (wifes idea. her car)

My current Impala set up is a Hotcammed LT1 / P&P LT1 aluminum heads.

If the guy had a bad tune or no tune, his car will run like dogpoop. My car put down 250 w/o a tune then jumped to 322 with a mailorder tune. Due to I installed bigger injectors, etc to facilitate the heads/cam. So the whole tune was outta whack.

But, he coulda been blowin smoke trying to intimidate you.
Nevertheless, good kill.

You mean...LT1 Vettes were autos in '96. ALL of the M6 Vettes in '96 got the LT4.

My friend's near-stock LT4 Vette runs slightly faster 1/4 mile times than me, low to mid 13's. The LT4 was rated at 330 hp I believe.

Yeah it was somewhere in there.

I looked at a LOT of C4 vettes before I ended up with the Cobra.. actualy still have a list I printed out of places to go and cars to look at on the day I bought mine. Drove my wife crazy looking for a car for 3 months.

The 96 M6 was by far the best of the C4's besides the gransports and the ZR1's (neither of which I got to drive anywhere.. or even see..). The LT1's from late 92-95 were all right, about equal to my cobra in terms of feel.. more torque and jerk to them though. The early 92 and back L89's were umm... lets not go there. And the 88 and back 4+3 was not a friend of mine either.. didnt like that tranny.

Anyways, my point is the LT4 is just a bad mutha compared to the LT1... Like comparing an NPI vs PI in the stang. To bad that the 96's go for so damn much.... I cant complain though I got a hella good deal for the snake between price and trade :D

There is no way it was a LT4 that guy was giving you BS, a lt4 conversion with hot cam will net 425 hp at the crank and around 370ish at the wheels depending upon tranny.

Most of your post is true, in fact the 96 C4 vette had a option from the factory for a LT4 engine or "grand sport" engine as it was listed as. They were in all collectors edition C4's in 96. There is really no way of identifying them unless you look under the hood and see the powder coated LT4 intake.

LT1Z28,
I'll trump that. The only vettes that had the LT4 were the Grand Sports and only the Grand Sport had the M6 option. There were no other option. I've bee through this many times. I have a very good friend who is vette fanatic and buy, sells and restores nothing BUT vettes. You're talking to an older guy who lived the years of these cars, not read about them. Live less than an hour away from the Vette plant and museum and have been there many, many times. So I know a little history of GM and the Vette.
BTW, would you happen to know where I can get a 83 vette??? LOL

Holy crap. Both of you!

1996 the LT4 was STANDARD with the manual transmission. It was not available with the automatic. They were in ALL M6 Corvettes in 1996...Grand Sport, Collector, Regular ol'Vette doesn't matter. Auto - LT1 Manual - LT4.

Are we clear on this now?

And Fast 4 Door. I know you're an older guy that lived during these cars...But I'm an older guy that HAD one. In 1996 there were 3 C4's in my family. 2 of them were 6-Speed LT4's. One was a 6-speed red coupe. The other was a 6-speed collector edition convertible. Both LT4's.

Wait a minute...Are you calling the cars Grand Sports because they had the GS plate on the throttle body?

This is the only car thats actually a Grand Sport. With the exception of the Gran Sport in 1963.

I am not trying to start anything so sorry if you took it that way..... But really go check it out, you could buy a collectors edition vette and yes even some regular vettes and check the LT4 option and it would come with one from the factory. It had the GrandSport badge on the throttle body so like sidewayz said perhaps you mistook that for a real grand sport. And yes Lt4's were only mated to a 6-speed. And i do know this for sure because my dad owns a 96 collectors edition.. It is silver and has the LT4 and we ordered it that way so yes i do know from experiance and not have had to read about them......
