RE: Good track car?
Hey Phantom,
I'm afraid you're going to have to give us more information.
1. What year GT do you have?
2. Define "affordable" for you. And how much are you willing to commit financially?
3. How much do you plan to hit the track? And what kind of racing?
4. Do you plan to compete, or just have fun w/your car?
5. Are you looking for a dedicated track car or one that doubles as a daily driver, occassional driver, cruise/show car, etc.?
Answering these gives us a baseline from which to start helping you out. At any rate, don't think that a solid axle automatically rules out a car for the track--look at the success Ford had with the new Mustang GT--it laid the smack down on plenty of IRS cars. The catch, of course, is that these are race tracks with smooth well-prepped/maintained surfaces...this isn't cross-country autocross. On a "level" playing field (pun intended), a solid axle can be made to perform just as well as an IRS. What car you have to start with and how much must be done to it to make it perform that way is another issue entirely.
Best,
-j
